Mothers of Invention :
It was 1969, and Zappa went on last at the Boston Jazz festival. There were people in black ties in the audience, who came to see Dave Brubeck (very good) and Jerry Mulligan (yeech). When the Mothers came on, they hit a dissonant chord that they kept going for several minutes, it seemed. The black tie crowd literally swarmed out of the building, and all the kids rushed the stage. I stood right in front of the band, and, one highlight was Roland Kirk with his 3 saxaphones and traditional African clothes jamming with the band. Zappa played guitar like the devil, and actually "conducted" the band, which was huge and included two drummers.
I was 15 at the time, and this remains the greatest musical experience of my life.
I would love to hear from anyone who was there.
