News [March 30, 2005]
Things are moving along quickly (well, relatively speaking) these days here at Studio Vheissu. The additional recording, remixing and remastering of Music from a Frozen World was done before the beginning of the year and printed inserts and CD graphics are sightly improved. Now I have to try to hawk it in earnest. Sound samples (MP3 format) are now available on the CD page. Also new in the "History" section are some photos and updates sent to me by Bill from Me, My Brother and I. See pictures of me at age 18 at the old Outback 1900 from 1972!
One of my current projects, which I am trying to squeeze in between working on new compositions, is preparing the score for one of the pieces from the CD, "Adrift in the Darkest Dawn" (MP3 excerpt from 3:52 to about 4:50), in order to submit it to the Philadelphia contemporary music ensemble Relâche. Their current "core octet" includes bassoonist Jon Gaardner and contrabassist Douglas Mapp, two of the four instruments needed for the piece. Tragically, their violist Tony Simmons was killed in an auto accident in February. The other two instruments in the piece are viola and vibraphone. We are going to attend their 25th anniversary twelve hour music marathon on May 28. I wrote to ask for permission to take photos and exchanged a couple friendly e-mails with Christopher McGlumphy, Managing Director for Relâche, who said that "the band will be happy to have someone take photos."
The 1002 Photography Project has gotten some wonderfully positive comments about the photos of bands that played at the inaugural edition of The Rites of Spring Festival (aka ROSfest) and last year's North East Art Rock Festival (aka NEARfest). Since my ISP, Earthlink, gives me 10MB of web space for each of eight e-mail addresses, I dedicated one site to my 1002 Photography Project and set up a separate framed web site to display the ROSfest photos and got some great feedback. Some of the members of the bands even took time to e-mail me and have been very positive. Sonus Umbra used one of the shots of them on their home page for a couple months after the festival and is currently using another one on the page announcing the departure of singer/acoustic guitarist Andres Aullet. I also got a very nice e-mail from RPWL drummer Manni Mueller who asked (and, of course, was given) permission to use them on the RPWL website. I also did a separate site with NEARfest photos. Three of my Strawbs photos are on their official website.
As I write it is only one more month until ROSfest 2005 and Cathi and I are very much looking forward to it. I am going to make some copies of the CD in order to shop it around and maybe get some interest started with it. I will add a news update after the festival. I also plan to have some more business-type cards made up to give out that have the Studio and the Photo Project e-mail and web addresses on them, featuring the Vheissu monkey logo (if perplexed, read V. by Thomas Pynchon - well, read it anyway).
