Minnie the Moocher was diognosed with Uveitis ten years ago. With aggressive aspirin and steroid ointment treatments, her loss of sight was gradual.
This eye began to shrink, exposing the inner eyelid. She's uncomfortable.
After the operation, with the prosthetic in place. A bit swollen, but looking good
Wearing her racing blinkers. I know, she looks like an S&M pony, but this was very helpful keeping her from rubbing her stitches.

Unfortunately, she rejected the prosthetic and it had to be removed. The skin healed quickly and cleanly and she is much happier despite her appearance.

Dr Fritz Koennecke, the vet who performed the operation. We were very lucky to have him. A long and gruelling operation with at least a month recovery. He came every week for two months to check on her progress.

In conclusion, I'd say if your horse needs this operation, it's worth every penny (under $800). Minnie's happier, she lost her sight gradually so all she knows is the pain is gone. I'm very disappointed the prosthetic didn't work, but we didn't think of the blinker mask until she had already rubbed the area. If you don't have a racing tack shop near you, call Jack's in Vernon, NY 800-2-tackup. They're around $30 and fit snugly. Now all we have to do is sew an eyepatch so we can ride in public again!
