Who IS This Guy?

Here are are couple of things that sum up who Blaze was the best, I think. There's more to come later.

From the liner notes of the album Blaze Foley, a tribute written by none other than Townes Van Zandt.
I met Blaze in New York six years ago. He was making a record, "If I Could Only Fly."
He was born in Marfa, Texas. I've never met his family, but they must be fine people.
He is one of the most spiritual cats I've ever met; an ace finger picker; a writer who never shirks the truth; never fails to rhyme; and one of the flashiest wits I've ever had to put up with.
He's only gone crazy once. Decided to stay.
But the main thing is the music. Blaze is a lover of things alive, and pleads their cause with every word.
Muscle Shoals Musicians are among the best in the world.
I am proud to call Blaze my Friend.

Townes Van Zandt
P.S. He's got rythm too.

Here's a poem written to Blaze on his birthday by a good friend.

Birth of the Blaze
by Fifi Larue

Perhaps it was snowing that December morn
When a baby boy to the Fullers was born
He was round and cute and very squeezy
And his mama prayed his life would be easy

"Let's test his stuff," said The Folks In The Know
So they gave him a dosage of polio
When he stood up and laughed, they decided that
They'd throw him a curve and make him fat

This worked for awhile, it confused him some
So he obliged the illusion of 'funny' or 'dumb'
He sang with the Baptists - "Hallelujah" & stuff
He did try to live straight, but it wasn't enough

He continued this role throughout the years
Was a super salesman at the local Sears
But when the boredom proved too heavy a load
He said finally "fuck it" and hit the road

He wandered the land a good part of his youth
In search of himself, his essence, his truth
And at times when he found it not easy to be
He consoled himself with a melody

Then they started to fit, the music and rhymes
All his life they'd helped him through harder times
And he became aware of what he'd known all along
That his reason for Life was in his song

This was written shortly after Blaze's death. I recorded it at Charlie
Hollis' studio, where Blaze had, not too long before, laid down two harmony
tracks on another of my songs, called "None For The Shepherd".  (Carlene Jones)

Yesterday I drove a ways outside of town
Watched the sun go down
Felt you not around
The birds a-flyin' in the sky were bound somewhere
I'd fade into the air
If I thought you were there

But I don't know which way to go or what to do
Or where to look for you
Or why this thing is true
Winter came to steal the flame and leave the frost
Another bar is crossed
I'm feeling cold and lost

Lately you've been in the news most every night
Your picture don't look right
You're shot in black and white
I wish I'd loved you better, but I didn't know
You'd be so soon to go
And Lord, I miss you so

Upon a mound of frozen ground they wrote your name
And all the people came
They'll never be the same
I try to find some peace of mind and move along
Hear another song
But all the birds are gone

Lately you've been in the news...(rpt. cho.)
