>Are there any decent progressive rock stations or even just progressive >rock shows in the New York City tri-state area?
Some Tuesdays between 3 and 6 pm a fellow sharp enough to remember to turn on the radio and tune in to WKCR, 89.9 FM -- Columbia's station -- will find himself treated to three hours of primo proto-prog and psych-prog by the likes of Quintessence, Man, The Groundhogs and others in that and related veins. The show is called The Levity Ball and is run by members of NYC improv collective The No-Neck Blues Band. They don't venture beyond 1974 or so, and positively disdain keyboards -- too bad for them -- but consistently come up with fine play-lists nonetheless.
A pretty impressive early / mid 90's SXE / hardcore compilation from Michigan's infamous PROGRESSION records. HARDBALL, DEVICE, FACE VALUE, RELAPSE, and RESOLUTION all make an appearance.

"...kittens drowning in milk, pheasants wandering in freeway lanes, lumberjacks
taking chainsaws to chalkboards, firemen burning down their own
firehouses, coffee spilled on khakis, rohypnal lip balm, turtles used as
bowling balls, wheelchair racing down steep steps, smoking toenails in a
bong, wooden sparrows on trees of feathers, forks jabbed in toasters,
nobody fed the dog, lightning striking again and again in the same place
over and over." - Mark Lewman, 11/6/01
