Family Stories
- Jesse Jackson Crow (my great-great-great-grandfather) was
murdered in Bell County, Texas. It was the biggest case of Bell County at
that time. Crow had a dispute with schoolteacher H. H. Hudson over school
board matters. Hudson shot Crow, and then Crow died about two weeks later.
Crow was able to testify on who shot him and why. Hudson's defense was
that Crow deserved to die because 1) he was a mean man and 2) he called
Hudson’s wife a prostitute. Hudson was found guilty and sentenced to 99
years in prison. The Appeals Court remanded it back to the lower court.
The case was tried again, and Hudson got 50 years in prison.
- In circa 1890, Hugh Morgan Hughes (my great-great grandfather) was
practically kicked out of Tennessee. Hughie shot a neighbor’s hogs that
kept getting into his corn. The neighbor was part of a vigilante group,
and they came after Hughie. They attacked him, and hit him on the head
with an ax causing serious injury. Hughie escaped and hid in a barn loft.
In the middle of the night, he, wife Allie Griffith, and his children
fled from their home in the Sequatchie Valley in Tennessee. They tried
to sharecrop corn somewhere on the way to Texas, but the crop was lost
due to flooding. They migrated to Johnson County, Texas where his wife's
brother (William Harrison Griffith) was postmaster. They eventually
settled in what is now Godley, Texas. The trip took six weeks of traveling
by ox wagon. Hughie was a blacksmith and passed the trade down to his son,
Aaron. (Source: Lamb and Allied Familes of the Sequatchie Valley by

- I'm my own sixth cousin. It was very common back in the olden days
for cousins to marry cousins. My great-great-grandparents were also
second cousins so that means that I'm my own sixth cousin. My duplicate
ancestors are Carlous Featherstone (or spelled Carlous Featherston) and
Lucy Elmore who are my 5th great-grandparents. Some Featherston /
Featherstone researches say Carlous was a descendant of the people who
owned Featherstone Castle in England. So, if I am to be double-related
to myself, I'm glad it's to them.
