Children’s and Young Adult Services:

Idaho State Library SABLE Program. This tutorial covers information on delivering services to children & young adults. Includes self-tests. http://libraries.idaho.gov/sable

Collection Development:

Arizona State Library’s Collection Development Training for Public Libraries. This is one of the most used library training tutorials. Each section contains a list of recommended resources for further reading and study. http://www.lib.az.us/cdt/

Idaho State Library ABLE Program. Includes: Writing a Collection Development Policy; Collection Assessment; Materials Selection; and Weeding. http://libraries.idaho.gov/able

Copyright

The Center for Intellectual Property at the University of Maryland University College offers an online, interactive tutorial on copyright basics called the ©Primer. Internet

Search Engine Tutorials. This site includes a number of tutorials, including Search Engine Math. http://www.searchenginewatch.com/resources/article.php/2156611

Web Search Strategies. Includes six different search tutorials, ranging from Boolean searching to using meta-search engines. There's a scavenger hunt exercise at the end to test your skills. Good layout and easy to understand. http://www.learnwebskills.com/search/main.html

Information Literacy

University of Texas Interactive Information Literacy Tutorial. Written for incoming freshmen, but provides a good overview of information literacy for anyone. http://tilt.lib.utsystem.edu/

The Washington State Library Info Literacy Project’s Resources for Library Staff. Includes handouts and resources on information literacy. http://www.librarysmart.com/working/forlibraries/01_resources.asp

Marketing

Marketing the Library (Ohio Library Council). Tutorial on why and how to market library services. Includes review quizzes and questions. http://www.olc.org/marketing/

Medical

Reference

Ohio Reference Excellence on the Web (Ohio Library Council). Aimed at novice reference staff, those who need a refresher on providing reference services and those who teach others to perform reference work. Interactive tutorials with lots of pictures and graphics. http://www.olc.org/ore/index.html

Minnesota Opportunities for Reference Excellence. This site features an excellent online reference tutorial including how to conduct the reference interview. It also looks at select reference tools and how to use them. STAR Reference Manual (Nebraska Library Commission). Great, basic tutorial on reference. The tutorial consists of chapters so you can select what topics interests you most. There are great customer service tips included, as well as suggestions on how to perform a good reference interview. http://www.nlc.state.ne.us/ref/star/contents.html

Technical Services:

Idaho State Library. Includes: Introduction to Technical Services and Cataloging; Introduction to Subject Headings; Introduction to Dewey Classification; and Introduction to MARC Cataloging. http://libraries.idaho.gov/able

Utah State Library. A basic cataloging tutorial with many links. Explanation of the Dewey Decimal system, MARC records, and subject headings. Some information may be slanted toward Utah users, especially resources for obtaining bibliographic records, but most of the information would be useful to any librarian. http://library.utah.gov/library_services/continuing_education/cataloging_basics.htm

OCLC. Introduction to MARC Tagging: An OCLC tutorial. This tutorial introduces you to the basics of bibliographic records, specifically MARC (MAchine Readable Cataloging) format records—what they are, how and why they are used, and how to read them. http://www.oclc.org/support/training/connexion/marc/default.htm

Trustee Training:

These trustee tutorials are part of LibraryU, a free web-based training for library staff and patrons, supported cooperatively by the Illinois Library Systems and the Illinois State Library with funding from the Gates Foundation. http://learning.libraryu.org/home

  • Library Construction Basics
    Designed for public library trustees and administrators, this module presents a chronological overview as well as explains the roles of the players and the steps involved in preparing for a library construction project.
  • Long-Range Planning for Public Library Trustees
    Long-Range planning is one of the duties of public library trustees. This module will give them a brief step by step look at the planning process based on the PLA book "The New Planning for Results" by Sandra Nelson.
