Women, as Subject

Much of my work is centrally about women, exploring such diverse topics as industrial work, single motherhood and the technologies of reproduction. Initially, in 1984 with the documentary video Women of Steel, I was interested in telling the stories of women as part of a larger social narrative... and used this technique in subsequent works, such as Life Without Father and the commissioned works Caring With a Contract (United Steelworkers of America, 1985) and Make Your Own Space (Pa. Department of Education, 1986). With Terminal Time, gender is one of five themes the audience can choose as the lens through which the recombinant history engine generates the performance and it is the theme I had the opportunity to script. In my work with subRosa I was been able to explore women's biology and the changes the new information technologies have on women's bodies, lives and work.
