IN HEAVY ROTATION ON MY CD PLAYER FOR FEBRUARY:

Autechre-PEEL SESSION (Warp/Nothing) A 3-song, 25-minute EP recorded in 1995. This combines very loud, abrasive percussion with fragile, sing-songy melodies to great effect. Autechre have an amazing ability to generate beauty out of noise.

Badawi-THE HERETIC OF ETHER (Asphodel) This is a 180-degree turn from Badawi's first two, dub-influenced albums. Much of this sounds like soundtrack music, with a heavy Middle Eastern influence and little-to-no electronics. The song titles suggest that it's a concept album, but there are no vocals and my copy - an advance CD that I found used for $3.99 - doesn't come with a booklet.

Bonnie 'Prince' Billy- I SEE A DARKNESS (Palace) It took a few listens to sink in, but this is one of the best albums yet from singer/songwriter Will Oldham and his many guises.

Don Cherry-BROWN RICE (A&M '76) An unusual, very funky album from Cherry, who sings on 3 of the 4 cuts. The title track could pass for Can.

Various Artists-EHTIOPIQUES VOLUME 1: GOLDEN YEARS OF MODERN ETHIOPIAN MUSIC (Buda France '69-'75) The first of a 10-volume series, I've been told that this is the most accessible volume. Much of this resembles an alternate universe version of Stax/Volt soul. These artists were heavily influencedby African-American music of the 60s, but they came up with something unique and fascinating.

Ex-STARTERS ALTERNATORS (Touch & Go)

Fennesz-PLAYS cd5 (Moikai) Two austere (and unrecognizable) electronic covers of the Stones' "Paint It Black" and the Beach Boys' "Don't Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulders)." This is beautifully arranged; if you listen to a 20-second snipppet, it sounds like a bunch of synthesizer bleeps and guitar plonks, but the overall effect is gorgeous. I wish I'd picked up Fennesz's now-deleted 3" CD from last year.

Caetano Veloso-s/t (Phillips Brazil '71)
