STAR TREKKIN

I've been A fan of Star Trek:The Original Series since it first aired from September 8th, 1966 to June 3rd, 1969 on the NBC television network.

Star Trek: The Original Series has been in syndicated reruns ever since it was cancelled by NBC in 1969!  Star Trek currently has a fan following in the millions!!! Todate, Star Trek is: 10 feature films, 4 spin off TV series, an animated series, book's, toy's, prop reproduction's and a plethora of annual convention's world wide. And NBC cancelled the show in 1969 because the ratings showed low viewership and that no one was watching! BaaaHaaHaHaHaHa!!!

Imagine what would or could have happened if the executives at NBC had been paying attention to it's viewers. We can only speculate, but who know's, "Star Trek: The Original Series" could have lasted well into the 21st century and beyond.........;-)

RAIL TREK

I am also a Railroad buff (foamer). I have enjoyed collecting train and railroad artifacts since I was 7.  As far back as I can remember, I always dreamed about and wanted to work for the Railroad. From when I was 10 years old until I was 18, I meet some train crews from the Santa Fe Ry. and Southern Pacific RR that would let me ride along with them.

About every other Saturday from 1964 to 1971, I would ride the Santa Fe Railways Passenger Train the "El Capitan" for a 4 hour trip from North Pomona to Los Angeles and back. The return trip was on "The Chief".  I was alowed to ride in the locomotive and/or baggage car if I new the crew.

I also rode the "Highland Park Turn" on some Saturday afternoons (1967-69). This was a local Santa Fe freight train out of San Bernadino to Pasadena and return. I new the Conductor.

In August of 1969 I met the train crew of the Southern Pacific's "Rialto Hauler" Run #926
(and the rest as they say is history).
From 1969 to 1973, you could find me riding aboard the Southern Pacific "Rialto Hauler" almost every Tuesday, Wednesday and most Saturdays.  This was a local freight train that worked from Baldwin Park, CA. to Rialto, CA. and back.  It ran on the former Pacific Electric Railway's (Red Car) San Bernadino Main Line.  I'd board the train in Claremont, CA. mid afternoon, ride in the Caboose and/or Engine and would return sometime late evening.  I stayed friends with most of the train crews for many years, worked with a few after I hired out and stayed in touch with those who had retired.  But it was the "Rialto Haulers" Brakeman, Richard (Dick) H. Ballard, who had the biggest influence on my life.  We remained very close friends until his un-timely passing in 1978. He was only 62.

Richard, Me & Sam - 1972

As soon as I graduated from High School I hired out with the Southern Pacific Railroad and established my seniority on 6-12-73 as a Trainman/Switchman.  I worked at the Southern Pacific West Colton Railroad Yards from 1973 until I went on the Road as a Brakeman in 1979.  Per Union and Railroad Agreements, I received my Conductors Seniority date as 4-15-1977.  I'm now in my 37th year on the Railroad, now Union Pacific Railroad account of a mega-merger. But in my heart, it will always be Southern Pacific!

Life on the railroad has been very good to me & my family and dreams do have a way of coming true!
However, I am looking forward to the day that I retire.  The BIG Plan: The day I turn 60 is when I want to enter into a relationship with retirement - July 6th, 2014!  :-)
Wow, that will make 42 years on the Railroad, not to metion all the time I spent playing trains before I hired on. Know wonder I'm tired!  LOL

(But I'd do it all over again in a heart beat)

PACIFIC ELECTRIC RAILWAY IN BOLD - 1926
rrmap.jpg

The above map shows the route I rode on from 1968 to 1973.
Line in RED is from (L to R) Claremont to Rialto, CA.

The tracks from Claremont to Rialto were sold to Metrolink in 1990 to become part of Southern Californias Commuter Rail Network from Los Angeles to San Bernardino. But this segment of the proposed route was to costly to upgrade and eventually the tracks were removed. Today Metrolink trains between Claremont & San Bernardino travel over the former Santa Fe Railway.

Currently there is an opportunity to create a 21 mile "Rail Trail" (Bike Path) that would link the cities of Claremont, Upland, Rancho Cucamonga, Fontana and Rialto following the old Pacific Electric/Southern Pacific Railroad Right-of-Way. For more information about this proposal, follow the link below to "The City of Rancho Cucamonga" and their proposal about the "Pacific Electric Rail Trail".
