A: A translation under oath is done following an appropriate form to have official validity in public institutions. This type of translation is printed on a crested paper which includes the personal information of the public translator (one who has to pass a public exam) who signs the translation.

Translations under oath are used in Brazil, but not used as much in the English speaking countries. In the English speaking countries, the most common form of translation is the certified one.

Certified translation is made by a person who is fluent in the language of the original document and in the language in which the translation needs to be made. The translator must declare, using specific words, that he/she is fluent in those languages. For instance, this kind of translation is necessary for documents used in the American immigration process, school reports.
