Letters to the Sports Editor

Flood Was a True Hero

I was glad to see the article on Curt Flood. He was a wonderful player. And he was ahead of his time in his courage to fight against Major League Baseball's reserve clause. The subsequent way he left the game cost him the spotlight of baseball fame.

Little mention was made, though, of his contribution toward breaking the color barrier in Major League Baseball. Here he was also a pioneer, entering the league in 1956. In this light, he was once quoted as saying, "I'm pleased God made my skin black. I wish He had made it thicker."

In this day of Rodman headlines, we could do a lot worse than to have heroes like Curt Flood.
