as the ball bounces off
hands that want it too much
or scuttles
down a runway
quick as a rat
racing to its hiding place
or settles
in the grip of a woman
who holds her prize aloft
flashes a grin
as the fans-knowing her
only for her luck-
cheer
as if her catch
could somehow change the game.
