ARTIST’S STATEMENT
The subject matter in a painting is of little importance to me as it should provide reference only. My artistic goal
is to paint the way I want the canvas to look...not how the subject matter appears. In my opinion a successful painting
contains rich darks, muted colors, a minimum of brilliant lights and is not academic or highly finished.
I am presently devoted to painting still life arrangements because this allows me to control the lighting and composition.
It is a challenge to paint objects bathed in a single light source as it moves over form, to create a believable atmosphere,
yet evoke a sense of mystery by merging objects into a dark background.
