Catalyst for Healing
by Robert L. Tusler
Music: Catalyst For Healing is a philosophical, theoretical, and practical basis for the use of music in mental hospitals, institutions for the handicapped, and in private practice. It is based on a profound respect for the power of music to touch the human organism. "No drug, no individual teacher, no school, no ideology or philosophy," Dr. Tusler writes, "can expand, enrich, and enlighten us as when we put to use the world of the arts." Drawing upon his extensive practical experience, he addresses himself not only to professional therapists but also to the general reader. More than a manual for the therapeutic use of music, the book leads the reader into music's awesome world and provides a warning against its abuse.
"Music: Catalyst For Healing is a clear introduction to the field of music therapy. The book is partly the personal observations of a therapist who has spent more than fifty years in the field, and partly that of a musicologist who has published studies of Bach and Sweelinck. Emphasizing a philosophical approach, Dr. Tusler also includes much technical expertise and practical advice. Starting with what makes up both music and therapy, he moves on to the characteristics necessary for a music therapist (a love of music and other arts, a repect for humanity, and intelllectual curiosity), shows the intimate connection between music and therapy, gives some practical adivice on working with patients, and ends with the thoughts of a number of outstanding figures (from St. Basil to Paul Tillich) on the power of music over human feelings and thoughts."
- Dr. Murray C. Bradshaw, Professor Department of Musicology, University of California, Los Angeles."
"The good work of music therapists, especially with mentally disturbed patients, is well-known, and Dr. Tusler is an exceptional therapist whose knowledge of music naturally goes well beyond that of the average practitioner."
- Ans Samama-Polak, physical therapist using the Mensendieck Method, specializing in muscle control for musicians, the Netherlands.
" I have had a long time interest in nursing as a human science. Your book speaks clearly and beautifully to the care of "who we are" and expresses a view of health and healing to be noted by diverse health care providers." ".... I applaud you as having already made a significant contribution to the healing arts."
- Lois S. Kelley, Director of School of Nursing, Fairleigh Dickinson University, Teaneck, New Jersey.
