Speaking of Horses
Health and Wellness

Chris Korben is an experienced Therapist as well as an experienced Horsewoman.  She is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker who has been involved in the development of the Equine Facilitated Mental Health Division of NARHA.  She brings an ecclectic mix of therapies including Emotional Freedom Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Solution Focused Therapy and Self Psychology to  her practice.  Some insurances will reimburse for part of the cost of individual treatment as out of network services.  Individual Sessions are available by appointment at 508 763 5254.  Workshops sessions may be reimbursed by some insurance companies at a group rate.

Equine assisted psychotherapy is a relatively new type of Experiential Psychotherapy that includes horses or other equines as part of the treatment.  The horses may participate in the therapy in a wide variety of ways. They help to create kinesthetic experiences that change, not just thinking, but emotions and perceptions.  As in other types of therapy, individual therapist, use theories that she or he has learned to create a therapeutic environment she or he believes will help the client to heal.  As with any form of therapy, it is wise to choose a clinician who is both licensed and experienced.  In Equine Assisted Therapies there are only a few credentialing bodies.   At this time they include Certificaion Board for Equine Interaction Professionals and the Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association (EGALA).  Some clinicians work with an Equine Professional, who does the horse handling part of the session.  But, even when there is an equine professional present, it is helpful for the clinician to be an experienced horse person.  Psychotherapy works in part because it is a place to go where we are seen and heard and accepted.  Adding horses to the treatment can help individuals benefit even more from therapy.
