Salt
Point State Park is located about 100 miles north of San Francisco, on
Highway 1. It is a 6000 acre park with 2 camping areas.
Woodside Campground is on the east side of the highway and Gerstle Cove
on the west. There is plenty of hiking to do in the area and
Kruse Rhododendron State Reserve is just a couple of miles up the
road. Unfortunately, much of the Gerstle area was burned in a
wildfire several years ago but it survives in stark contrast to the
Woodside area. Gerstle Cove is rather famous as a red abalone
fishing grounds but is otherwise an underwater reserve where no form of
marine life may be taken or disturbed. Many of the little coves
in this area were once used as ports of call for the lumber industry
and steel mooring rings are still to be found in the rocks. A
nice web site for Salt Point State Park and some of the surrounding area
is located here. We
have been to Salt Point
a number of times and really enjoy the area.
