Building a dock can be a
simple process for the most part, but can quickly turn more complex
depending on the specifics of the project and by not following
permitting and design requirements. Using a reputable dock/lift contractor can be the most important part of the process. Your neighbors are your best resources of information as many will have a variety of experiences to share with you. A contractor will work with you to develop a design based on what you are trying to achieve and advise you on setbacks and other limitations of the project. It is advisable to work with more than one contractor as they may present differing designs and pricing alternatives. Once you've selected a contractor, the designs will be finalized and submitted for permitting. You will need a permit from the Hillsborough County Environmental Protection Agency and from the Port Authority. Information on design guidelines and limitations and the permitting process can be found via the links below. http://epchc.org/docks_and_boardwalks.htm http://tampaport.com/subpage.asp?navid=&id=8 The permitting process is generally completed within 6 weeks but may take longer. The contractor will need to utilize a barge for the construction process. The process takes approximately 2 weeks and will involve driving/jetting the pylons into the canal floor, building the "deck", and attaching the hardware that comprises the lift mechanism. Electrical is not in the scope of the dock contractors permit or capabilities and will need to be completed by a licensed electrician. Usually, it is best to wait until the dock construction is complete and the hardware is mounted before contracting the electrician. This will ensure that the electrician can complete the work in one day. Other good tips:
