Performance projects:
Gregor Huebner - violin Rob Thomas - violin Tomas Ulrich - cello Johannes Weidenmueller - bass "No Strings Attached" was formed in 1996 with the purpose of performing new music which incorporates rhythmical and improvisational elements, in a crossover genre jazz / contemporary compositional music. The players are carefully selected from a small, but growing body of improvising string players based in New York. The necessary skills required to play this music are almost only found among musicians who have both a solid classical training as well as a thorough knowledge of jazz and modern improvised music. But also a strong sense of rhythm is essential, since much of the music is inspired by African, Indian and Eastern European rhythms. The instrumentation for this ensemble is two violins, cello and double bass as opposed to the traditional string quartet which includes two violins, viola and cello. Compared to a traditional string quartet, the presence of the bass allows a different approach to rhythm, texture and timbre. At the same time it frees up the role of the cello, which can then take a more solistic function. Sonia's collaboration with the musicians of No Strings Attached was made possible by the Royal Danish Consulate General and the Danish Foreign Ministry. Hear samples here: Discography
Sonia Jacobsen - soprano saxophone Rob Thomas - violin Chris Washburn - trombone and tuba Johannes Weidenmueller - bass Gilad - percussion The repertoire of this ensemble is similar to that of No Strings Attached, but in a slightly (only slightly) more conventional jazz setting. One could call it groove oriented chamber jazz?
