The Best-Tasting Way to Drink Soda

I am not quite sure why, but drinking soda from a glass bottle seems to taste better. For most people, the glass bottle is still considered the best-tasting way to drink Soda.

If you were born before 1965, the chances are very good that your first Soda was from a returnable Soda bottle. Unfortunately, glass, returnable bottles are no longer used for Soda. Returnable, glass Soda bottles have been around since 1905. Soon after, a small deposit was required on each bottle to insure its return to the retailer. Bottles were consumed, returned for credit, and refilled in this manner for the next fifty plus years.

The 1960's marked the beginning of the end of returnable bottles. The changes in lifestyle and consumer demand for convenience resulted in a growing need for one-way bottles and cans. Recycling also drove the demand for one-way bottles and cans. Over the next thirty years, cans and plastic bottles became the dominant way people purchased Soda.

The good news is that many of our favorite Sodas still available in glass bottles. Despite the dominance of non-returnable plastic bottles, there are a host of bottlers who continue the tradition of bottling with glass bottles.

Coca-Cola can be purchased in recyclable 8oz glass bottles. In addition, many of these bottles are issued to celebrate a special event. The event is recognized by printing a logo, symbol, or image on the bottle. During Christmas Cola-Cola issues an annual collectible bottle. A new method being introduce is to wrap the bottle in a plastic wrap that allows photographs to be used. Many of these bottles are often collected by Coca-Cola collectors and become very collectible. Some of the bottles have collectible values up to $300.

I have also found a resurgence of some popular Soda Brands such as Pepsi, Moxie, Frostie, NEHI, Dr. Pepper, RC Cola, Stewarts, Jolt, Mason's Rootbeer, and Bubble-up. In addition, some new brands or retro sodas are also available in glass bottles. These include Faygo, Pirates Keg, Delaware Punch, and many more. Now you have the chance to taste your favorite soda the way it was meant to taste packed in glass bottles.
