is proud to host a screening of ARLINGTON WEST
This moving documentary by longime activst-artists Sally Marr and Peter Dudar is one of the most powerful counter-recruiting tools available.Program Includes Presentations by:
Sally Marr & Peter Dudar Tim Goodrich, Co-founder of Iraq Veterans Against the War Special Performance by Wil b. of the Political Power of Hip Hop
For the living, this film asks, "How could this have happened?" " For the dead, it asks, "Why?"  This film is a riveting visit to a sea of crosses on the beaches of California and other locations around the U.S. Each cross symbolizes a fallen U.S. GI. This powerful protest is recreated every Sunday by the Veterans For Peace. The number of crosses increases as the weeks go by. A sign also entreats passersby to contemplate the Iraqi civilians, "If we were to honor the Iraqi dead, it would fill this entire beach.""  The crosses provide an eloquent stage for compelling dialogue with military families, veterans, soldiers going to and from Baghdad, and children. The film, Arlington West, allows all to witness the poignant conversations, dramatic revelations, silences, personal experience, and share the tears with those who are paying the highest prices for war. A full array of opinions and sentiments are presented: Active Duty Soldiers and Marines, Military Families, Veterans, and Children are featured in this revealing Documentary. This film is an excellent tool for discussions, meetings and classrooms to de-mystify the "glories of war."

Information on Proposition 54:

Passage of Proposition 54 will jeopardize public health, hamper educational improvement, encourage racial profiling, limit enforcement of hate crime laws and hide the evidence of racial discrimination

Prop 54 is being peddled as a privacy measure but it has nothing to do with privacy. Prop 54 has everything to do with dismantling civil rights protections for all Californians. Prop 54 is a radical ultra conservative scheme to eliminate the collection of the data which allows us to detect racial or ethnic disparities in healthcare and disease patterns, in access to educational institutions and public resources, in measuring academic achievement, and in tracking hate crime and discrimination.

Why are vital statistics so important? Public health officials use vital statistics to focus disease treatment and prevention efforts. Educators use vital statistics to improve student performance. Law enforcement and civil rights advocates use vital statistics to monitor and fight hate crimes and to prosecute racial discrimination.

Prop 54 will not make us color blind. It will blind us to our problems and put public health, educational progress, public safety and civil rights at risk. Ignorance is irresponsible. We urge you to vote

'No' on prop 54 - October 7th

Sunday, October 25, 1998 An Afternoon With April Oliver and Jack Smith
In the past several months, a tremendous amount of attention was focused on a June television broadcast by CNN entitled "Valley of Death" which alleged that the U.S. may have used nerve gas on American defectors in Laos during the Vietnam War. The uproar resulted in the sacking of the two principal journalists, April Oliver and Jack Smith, and the retraction of the story by CNN. A so-called independent report was prepared by CNN Senior Vice President & General Counsel, David Kohler, and Floyd Abrams, an attorney and consultant hired by CNN. It concluded the evidence did not justify the conclusion made in the broadcast, despite CNN's approval prior to the airings. Though gagged by CNN immediately after the broadcast, Ms. Oliver and Mr. Smith stand by their reports and have been speaking out about CNN's report, the story's retraction and their firing. On, Sunday, October 25, from 4 to 6 p.m. (Remember we change our clocks that day) SCADA will be hosting an in-depth interview with April Oliver and Jack Smith at the University Synagogue, 11960 Sunset Blvd. in West Los Angeles. The event will be moderated by Bill Rosendahl, host of cable TV's "This Week in Review." A $10 donation is requested in order to reimburse the travel costs of our participants. Tickets are available at the door. Sponsoring organizations are Southern California Americans for Democratic Action (SCADA), American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), Fairness & Accuracy In Reporting (FAIR) and the Social Justice Committee of University Synagogue. For more info contact the SCADA Event Hotline at 323-852-9190.

Saturday, October 10,1998, Rally to Support Sewing Workers
Each year, just prior to the Holiday shopping season, the National Labor Committee holds a "Season of Conscience" to call attention to child labor abuses and sweatshop conditions that exist in this country and abroad. A demonstration was held on Saturday, October 10 outside the Wal-Mart store at 14500 Roscoe Blvd. in Panorama City in the San Fernando Valley. The rally met at the Northwest corner of Roscoe & Van Nuys Blvds at 11:00 a.m. Participating organizations included Southern California Americans for Democratic Action (SCADA), San Fernando Valley Alliance for Democracy, Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance, Burma Forum, Jewish Labor Congress, Committee In Solidarity with the People of El Salvador (CISPES) and other.
