Grafoil® Flexible Graphite gaskets and Packings are all-graphite products containing no resin binders or organic fillers. Their outstanding resistance to corrosion, even at high temperature, and their ability to retain compressibility at all temperatures, recommend them for service in the many inorganics and organics listed. In addition, Grafoil® Gaskets and Packing are performing successfully in a number of unusual applications — in some cases. They are the only materials which have been able to withstand certain rigorous service demands.

What is GRAFOIL® Flexible Graphite?

GRAFOIL® Flexible Graphite is a distinctive material with essential characteristics of graphite but with complementary properties different from conventional manufactured carbons or graphite such as those used in mechanical seals. When flexibility, compactibility, conformability, and resilience are added to graphite's basic properties, you have the characteristics of "flexible graphite". You also have a superior high-performance packing and gasketing material.

How is GRAFOIL® Flexible Graphite manufactured?

UCAR Carbon manufactures GRAFOIL® Flexible Graphite as a rolled sheet product by taking a high quality particulate graphite flake and processing it through an intercalation process using strong mineral acids. The flake is then heated to volatilize the acids and expand the flake to many times its original size. The expansion process produces a wormlike, dendritic-like structure that can be readily formed by molding or calendering into sheets. No binders are introduced in the manufacturing process. The result is a sheet product that exhibits excellent tensile strength and, for industrial applications, typically exceeds 97% elemental carbon by weight.

What are some typical characteristics of this material?

It is flexible, compressible, resilient, chemically inert, fire safe, and stable under load and temperature. It is also anisotropic due to its crystalline structure and has excellent directional, electrical and thermal conduction properties. GRAFOIL® Flexible Graphite has found applications in chemical gasketing, high temperature automotive gasketing, heat shielding, and noise damping components. It is also effective in electronics applications involving RFI and EMI shielding, as well as heat sink applications.

Is the source of the raw natural graphite flake you start with an important factor?

The origin of the raw incoming flake is extremely important. UCAR Carbon sets rigid standards and is very selective in the qualification of available world flake sources to eliminate undesirable and harmful elemental contaminants in UCAR's finished products.

Does UCAR acid treat its flake or is it purchased from someone else?

To assure the highest possible control and quality in this critical process step, UCAR Carbon has processed its own flake since we invented flexible graphite over 30 years ago. We also believe processing flake ourselves in our highly automated process, rather than purchasing this service, allows us to more effectively manage costs. We are continually improving our process so that today it is a world-class, state-of-the-art flake processing facility.

What thicknesses and sizes are available?

Material is available starting with our patented ultra-thin .003" thick GTTMY, or standard materials from .005" up to .060" thick, in standard increments of .005". Our standard rolling line widths are 24" and 39.4". Material can also be supplied in custom slit widths or cut sheets. We can also laminate sheets to form virtually any thickness desired.

What densities are available?

Standard density is 70 lbs/ft3 (1.12 g/cc) . However, depending on thickness and order size, densities from below 50 lbs/ft3 up to 90 lbs/ft3 can be manufactured.

Can GRAFOIL® Flexible Graphite be combined with other materials?

Yes. GRAFOIL® Laminates are available in several styles with metallic or non-metallic interlayers for additional strength, adhesive facings, and other configurations. For appropriate volumes, we can even help design a laminate for your specific needs.

What grades are available for sheet, laminates, or other GRAFOIL® Products?

Several grades are available depending on your particular application. From the GRAFOIL® Home Page, look for the "Products" button and follow it to the various grade definition tables. For further assistance, contact our Sales Office and they will be glad to explain our product offerings and help you select a grade ...or you can request that a technical field sales person contact you.

Where is GRAFOIL®Flexible Graphite sheet actually manufactured and how can someone be assured they are getting genuine GRAFOIL® Flexible Graphite?

All GRAFOIL® Flexible Graphite is manufactured in our plant in Cleveland, Ohio. We have multiple state-of-the-art production lines giving us the flexibility to produce material to exacting specifications with the dependability, consistency, and on-time delivery our customers demand. When you need flexible graphite, always specify GRAFOIL® Flexible Graphite from UCAR Carbon Company Inc.

Ultra-Low Temperature Magnetization of Solid ^3He Films on Exfoliated ZYH Graphite

Barry I. Barker, David Krieger, D.D. Osheroff (Stanford University)

Two-dimensional solid ^3He films show a variety of nuclear magnetic phases as a function of areal density at low temperatures due to the interplay of multiple particle exchange processes and crystalline structure. These phases include ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic, and paramagnetic phases. Previous experiments indicate that the presence of misaligned platelets and finite size effects may play a role in the magnetic properties observed. Most previous experiments utilized Grafoil, an exfoliated graphite with atomically flat regions 100Å\ across, as the substrate due to the high specific surface area (20m^2/g). Although Grafoil is an very good substrate, roughly half of the surface area is in the form of randomly aligned platelets. In addition, roughly 10-20% of all the adsorbed atoms are at or near platelet edges. A nuclear magnetic resonance experiment using exfoliated ZYH graphite as substrate is in progress to determine the magnitude of these effects. Exfoliated ZYH graphite has platelets which are roughly 2000Å\ across and are better aligned than those in Grafoil. Preliminary magnetization data and comparisons with previous experiments will be presented.

High Temp Grafoil ® Seals & Gaskets !!!!

The best thing to happen to the sealing and gasket industry over the last 10 years has got to be Flexible Graphite or Grafoil® and we handle all types. Including: Sheet, Ribbon, Braided and Ribbon Pack. At one time it was only used in high temp applications, but like the computer your on ....the prices have come down.

Flexible Graphite die formed rings & ribbon pack Ribbon Pack used for Valves in the field, or to make die formed packing sets is one of Grafoils ® most common uses. Used in Refineries, Power Plants, Co-Generation Facilities or anyone dealing with high temp applications. We can deliver it to you in any dimension you choose
Flexible Graphite Sheet Flexible graphite, due to it's softness seals great but can also break if bent too far. To make it easier to handle we offer it with a 316 S.S. foil insert, tanged insert, or for easier cutting - no insert at all. Available in a range of grades from automotive & Industrial to Nuclear.
Die formed flexible graphite set Die formed sets for valves in applications that require the lowest of leak rates. Now a standard in the valve industry because of it's effectiveness, Carbon yarn end rings with die formed flexible graphite center rings

Braided Grafoil

Thermabriad   Temp: 1200 F Steam,  0-14 pH

A high temperature packing good for most applications. Now available in this braided version that eliminates the need for dies. Great for high temp or chemical applications (non-oxidizing) that can not leak. When you have to have the leak rate near that of a Mechanical Seal in a pump this is the packing to use.
