Sarah L. Thomson: Creating Worlds to Explore
Pirates Everywhere! Listen to a lively reading of Pirates Ho!, create your own treasure map, find buried treasure, and decorate a pirate hat. Pirate costumes encouraged and no one will need to walk the plank. Dragons and More After listening to selections from the fantasy adventure Dragon’s Egg, a Lupine Award winner, children can participate in a Dragon Egg Hunt and do an art project to create their own creature out of legend and myth. Imagine: A Poetry Workshop Discover how the worlds of poetry and art combine. After sharing the poems and images from the pictures book poetry collection Imagine a Night, participants experiment with writing their own poetry, inspired by the magical realist paintings of Rob Gonsalves. Three Cups of Tea: An Intergenerational Discussion Greg Mortenson’s adventurous and inspiration story, detailed in the book Three Cups of Tea, became a New York Times bestseller. Now readers of all ages can discover how this mountain climber dedicated his life to building schools in remote areas of Pakistan and Afghanistan. I will lead an intergenerational discussion group where children and adults can share their thoughts and feelings about this remarkable true story. If a school or library or bookstore agrees to run a Pennies for Peace drive to raise money for the Central Asia Institute, I will donate 20% of my fee.
