Side Exit Exhaust

Original Exhaust System

Feb. 2003

The car came with a stock rear exhaust exit, featuring a passive cat and small muffler can under a heat shield. The setup was quite restrictive, made fumes to waft into the cockpit and sounded tinny. One of the first modifications to the car was to change to a side exit exhaust.

Hot Rod Style Muffler

This tiny bullet "hot rod" muffler was of the baffled type, not too loud and did not sound bad. It did get very hot on the outside and required a heatshield. For this purpose I coiled thin-walled stainless tube around it.

This heat shield weighed less than one pound

I found the baffled muffler created a backpressure measured more than 6 psi at higher revs, stealing significant top-end power. Therefore I replaced it with a proven straight-through design.

This is a Magnaflow 4" dia by 29" bullet muffler with an add-on glasspack muffler tip. This configuration was inexpensive and worked well. However, it was very loud with an aggressive tone from the beginning.

Header Collector and Lambda Probe Bung

Close-up of the collector connection with a weld-in lambda probe bung. I kept this configuration for 2 years until the packing of the muffler was beginning to blow out. The anyway loud exhaust note became annoying and I finally changed to a bigger volume re-packable muffler.

It is a 6" by 30" titanium muffler from Raceco, UK. Very light (<10 pounds) and repackable I hope it will last for a long time (at the price it better does).

The exhaust noise is noticeably less. Measured with a sound-level meter under similar load conditions it is approx. 5dBA difference. Additionally the sound is much deeper and more pleasant.
