Gallo of Sonoma
Sonoma County

Eric's Rating:
2.17 vinegar bottles.

One of the finest vinegars available.

On the label:
"At the 1996 San Francisco International Wine Competition, more than 2,000 or the world's foremost wines were entered. Of these, only 22 captured Double-Gold medals. GALLO of SONOMA was the only winery to be awarded multiple DOUBLE-GOLDS - three of those 22 in fact - and for that reason we were named Winemaker of the Year."
Taste what the Winemaker of the Year can do. Cabernet Sauvignon from Sonoma County's finest vineyards. Artfully vinified and then carefully aged in American and French oak barrels. The result ...a wine with suppleness and power, with complex flavors of ripe berry, cherry, spice, and oak."

That's quite a send up. There is a lesson here: "It is easier to produce a glorified label than it is to produce a decent wine." Unfortunately, I don't think this could be called wine. The bottle I purchased was turning to vinegar - fast.

Well, if the Winemaker of the Year sees fit to sell me a bottle of vinegar, I will review it as vinegar. What remaining Cabernet flavors it had were nondescript. My feeling is that even when it was wine it was probably mediocre at best.

As I said, the initial taste holds meek remnants of Cabernet. But then, hold on to your tongue. The middle and finish is all vinegar. If at any time you need to induce vomiting, this product will do nicely. The wine could also be used as a form of corporal punishment - perhaps provided to winemakers who sell vinager in wine bottles.
