Kindergarten and Grade One
Of course there is a lot of learning going on in the K-1 classroom. I can see so much progress in their reading and writing!—one of the joys of working with the younger
set.
We took a field trip to a local pumpkin
patch on October 9. The day was a sunny 60 degrees. Everyone enjoyed the wagon ride behind the workhorses Thunder and Belle, the maze, the pumpkin launch,
and picking out the pumpkins. We also had a Harvest party of snacks, drinks and
games.
We will be making a jack-o-lantern in the classroom at the end of this month. Before that we will weight it, and measure the girth and height to give the kids an idea about measuring. The kids will enjoy digging out the pulp, at which time we will count the seeds. I will roast them and bring them back for a healthy snack!
We are all participating in the Pizza
Hut Book-It! program, in which the children read the number of books of the month’s
goal, and then they receive a certificate for a free pizza. Reading at home while
learning to read at school reinforces what is taught at school, so they are really progressing nicely!
God’s blessings to all,
Mrs. Bloomfield
Grades Two and Three
On October 9, the students at St. John took a field trip to Burch Acres Pumpkin Patch. It was a beautiful day! At the pumpkin
patch the students enjoyed finding their way through the corn maze. My students
began to wonder if we would find the way out soon. I was also wondering this! What fun the maze was! We also picked
pumpkins, rode on the hay wagon, played on the equipment, and launched small gourds at a target. The target shooting with a large slingshot and gourds was one of their favorite activities! The children wanted to get in line again and again to try to hit the target. After that we returned to school for a harvest party. Mrs.
Fink was the room mother. She made treats, goodie bags, and planned fun activities
for the students. They enjoyed the day and can hardly wait to go again next year!

Grades Six - Eight
October has been quite a full month! Volleyball games filled most of the 5-8th grade girl’s time.
We finished the season off strong with winning our last two games. It was a great season, with a lot of improvement. Mrs.
Ochs and I really enjoyed working with the girls this year. We also went to the pumpkin patch for our harvest party. It was
a great time filled with rides, mazes, pumpkin picking, and pumpkin launching. I think we all wish we had a little more time
to spend there! In class the 7-8th graders are really starting to understand how Kansas played a roll in the United States
history. They are also learning what theme is, and how to find theme in each story. The 6th graders continue to learn about
all the ancient civilizations. They really love it! The 4-6th graders are also learning about a variety of reading skills.
They get a new skill each week. The 4-6th graders have also gotten the joy of learning from and using the smart board. What
a great tool that has been in my classroom! I’m able to do so many things with it, and the students seem to really love
it! The 4-6th graders have also been working on writing using description. They have got to describe things from messy rooms
to new bus stops! Congrats to our AR movers this month: Abigail- 75pts, and Abbie- 100pts. I pray that your month to come
is blessed, and that you stay warm as the cold weather comes and stays! In Him, Mrs. White
From The Principal
As teachers, there are many people who deserve
our thanks: Parents - for entrusting their children to us. Congregation members - for supporting
the school ministry. School support staff (secretaries, maintenance workers, cooks, bus drivers, teacher
aids, public school and COOP teachers, etc.) who enable the school to operate efficiently. Pastors - who minister
to the supporting congregations. Our families - for their support as we carry out our ministry in a Lutheran school.
During the first quarter, the
children expressed their thanks to God by donating part of their treasures in chapel. The children raised $170 to give to
Samaritan’s Purse. Next quarter we will be raising funds for the Guinea
Mission Partnership.
The following individuals contributed
to the Thrivent Gift Matching program during October: Katherine Schultz, John Savage, Brenda Meseke, Larry Ringel, Carmen
Altevogt, Paul Savage, Julia Anderson, Letha Herren, Gayle Grimm, Laura Stuewe, and Sara Schultz. We received a total of $3720
for October, 2009. This means we will receive a bonus check from Thrivent of $1860. That is fantastic.
The
“Giving Plus” program will be ending at the end of this year. They also think they might run out of money before
the end of the year. Please consider giving a gift as soon as possible before
this free money runs out. If you need help in filling out a form, please let
me know.
The
volleyball season came to an end on October 8. Under the direction of Mrs. White
and Mrs. Ochs the girls improved their volleyball skills. They finished the season with a record of 2 and 5.
The
football season also came to an end in October. The team finished the season
with a record of 3 and 4.
There
will be no winter sports at St. John this year. Students in 7th & 8th grade can participate in Wrestling, Girl’s
Basketball or Boy’s Basketball at Mill Creek Valley Junior High. The PTL
will be covering the $50 per head participation fee.
Students
will be dismissed for Thanksgiving vacation from November 25-27.
Students
will be without bus service on November 16 as the public school is having inservice.
