State of the Parish
At least once each year, we review
the efforts of St. John Lutheran Church. Our Annul Reports help us to accomplish this, so that we may focus our efforts on
greater and more dedicated service to our Savior, Jesus Christ. 2008 was a year filled with God’s grace. We had baptisms and confirmations, weddings and funerals, and God provided growth. These activities remind
us of Jesus words: “My kingdom is not of this world.” All our members have been sought by the continuing love
of Christ Jesus, our crucified and risen Lord. The Gospel is being preached,
and neighbors, as well as strangers, have joined us in worship. We continue to try to reach out to the lost in our community
with evangelism efforts, news articles, and weekly prayers.
Being Lutheran, we focus on the
clear word of God, the Bible, as we have learned to understand the Scripture from Luther’s Small Catechism. We trust
God to work among us according to His revealed deeds and His declarative promises. There is nothing, and there is no person
who is more precious than our Lord Jesus Christ. We have been redeemed by Him. We are loved by Him. We shall be raised with Him.
We are grateful for His words and His actions, for they save us from the sinful self within us.
Can we show our faith? That remains the desire of God’s people: to honor God
by holy living. That includes attendance at church and the Lord’s Supper,
Scripture reading and Bible study, and prayer and faithful service to God and to our fellowman. We know the truth of God, and we seek to live it, in order to show the mercies of his grace. We forgive because Christ forgives. We love, because he first loved us.
It is the faithfulness of God that equips and encourages us to revere His holy name, and to serve His fallen world.
Do we understand how much God’s
actions in Jesus Christ change the world? We hope for a life with God in heaven, and many do not know what God has done, or
if they know, they do not care. God wants us to look at life with a perspective of grace. Life is not confined to the wants
of the body, nor the sins of the soul. We are redeemed to live for joy, peace, and righteousness, which declare God’s
goodness.
Even though we have high aspirations
of service at St. John Lutheran Church and School, we take time to evaluate what we do and how we shall try to do it. Consider the work that is being done. Compare
it with the work God wants done among us. Is it perfect? No, our service is not
perfect, but God blesses our efforts, so that his grace may be multiplied.
For God’s people, it is
enough to know God’s promises: “My word does not return void, but accomplishes that for which I sent it.”
(Is. 55) It remains our goal and our privilege to serve God as “A family united by faith in Jesus Christ, gathering around God’s Word and sacraments, to reach out in
Christ-borne love and Christ-like concern, in ministry to each other and those without Christ.”
Grace (God’s riches at Christ’s
expense) remains our focus, God remains our hope. When we are baptized, when we are confirmed, and each day when we repent
of our sins, we promise to view the world with God’s eyes, loving those who seem different than us, those who have less
than us, and those who need His care. This vision of faith leads us to deny ourselves,
and to take up our cross and follow Him. May God help us to serve Him, and bring His good to bear in the lives of all our
members and community!
Hallelujah! God continues to bring
mercy to his people. Amen! Many thanks
to everyone involved for all the reports which follow. They show many aspects of our congregational life during the past year. They show some of our successes and reveal that we are not yet perfected in service
to our Lord. I pray that they encourage us to offer our very best to the Lord in the adventures coming this year at St. John
Lutheran Church. Blessings in Christ!
