General Description

Apples & Oranges is an experiential learning program designed to increase understanding of business and financial terminology, profitability analyses, financial statements, financial indicators and more. Working in teams in a hands-on, interactive environment, participants enthusiastically demonstrate how capital circulates through a company. Using continuous improvement exercises, business decisions are made and ideas generated that will have direct application back in the workplace.

A game board illustrates how different aspects of a business interrelate with each other. Participants discuss ways to improve performance through better utilization of resources resulting in measurable increased earnings. Changes are quantified by constructing income statements and balance sheets from visual observations of the game board.

The Healthcare version explores the interplay of the two operational sides of the health care industry, caregiving and selling healthcare products. It examines controlling costs under competitive pressure and government regulations while maintaining quality care for a growing and aging population.

At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

Modify behavior and positively improve "bottom-line" results
Describe, understand and construct a balance sheet and income statement
Ask strategic questions to uncover internal organization and/or customer needs
Comprehend how operational and financial variables influence their own company's and their customers' cash flow and profitability
