"I am a Jew and will be a Jew forever.
Even if I should die from hunger,
never will I submit.
I will always fight for my people,
on my honor.
I will never be ashamed of them.
I give my word.
.
I am proud of my people,
how dignified they are.
Even though I am suppressed,
I will always come back to life."

Thank you for your interest in "Benjamin and Judah". This project is extremely close to my heart. I am a graduate of the UCLA music department and have been composing musical theatre for over six years. I have had my work produced on both coasts.

Growing up Jewish, the Christmas season always brought confusion to me as a child. I loved to watch all of the wonderful programs aired around Christmas, but wondered where the Hannukah specials were. Though not religious in content, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and Santa Claus is Coming to Town deal with Christmas themes, and I constantly wondered why there was not a program for Hannukah. I remember reading advertisements in the newspapers for the Glory of Christmas and A Christmas Carol and again wondered why there were not programs for Hannukah. "Benjamin and Judah" is my solution to this problem. It is my wish that this show will be produced year after year during the holiday season. I want it to give Jewish families around the world a chance to share the glory of Hannukah together and provide an alternative to the influx of Christmas programs.

"Benjamin and Judah" is a musical that deals with a young boy, Benjamin, who is teased by school bullies for being Jewish. This causes Benjamin to begin questioning his Judaism. On the first night of Hannukah Benjamin dreams he is transformed into Judah Macabee. Through musical melodies and songs you will leave the theatre singing, Benjamin relives the story of Hannukah and fights the war against Antiochus IV, thereby winning the Hebrews their religious freedom. Benjamin wakes up from his dream with a renewed faith in himself and his Judaism.

The show runs one hour and fifteen minutes and is filled with beautiful melodies coupled with comedic songs like "We Jewish Kids Get All The Luck". It is geared for the entire family and gives them a wonderful Hannukah experience to enjoy together. "Benjamin and Judah" will hopefully spark conversation between parents and children regarding the story of Hannukah and their own faith. It is my hope that children will learn that Hannukah is not just a holiday where they receive gifts, but also a significant part of our Jewish history.

"Benjamin and Judah" premiered in New York City in June of 1996. It was sponsored by Congregation Rodeph Sholom. I am thrilled to have the West Coast Premiere of "Benjamin and Judah" this year in San Diego and Los Angeles simultaneously.

Thank you again for your time and interest. I look forward to meeting you and seeing you at the West Coast Premiere of "Benjamin and Judah." Let me be the first to wish you a Happy Hannukah!

Sincerely,

DAVID SHUKIAR
