"What have I been up to?" one might very well ask. Well, in a nutshell, I broke up with my BATT (Boyfriend-at-the-time) and moved to Los Angeles, took a new job, acquired a car, learned how to climb, started to regularly scuba dive, applied for a grant, thought about quitting my job and moving to Alaska, studied for and took no less than 4 standardized tests, applied for graduate school, received my grant, did my Christmas shopping and acquired an entire family I love. Whew... a busy few months as the stress-o-meter above indicates.
In detail: I am currently working as a trainer/technical support specialist at a small managed care software company that has been bought by a larger company named Object Products. The foray into the for-profit world has certainly been enlightening and has reminded me of what I really wanted to do, namely work with kids.
In June 1997, I began working on a grant for the American Assocation of University Women. I thought that a great project would be to bring together women who work in technology, particularly internet technology, and middle-school aged girls. One idea was to have the girls learn how to build websites that they would be responsible for maintaining and updating. So I dutifully began to research and came across some fascinating women who work in New Media. Fast foward to November: I got the grant and the Girl's Domain Project was born.
But, there has been a lot of time for travel and fun. One of my favorite trips was when Lori and I went to Santa Cruz in May for some scuba diving and a Catie Curtis concert. It was basically an excuse to see some people that we really love to spend time with.
Among our musical journeys, we attended Bumbershoot this year (and are planning on going again in 1998 - check out our future plans page). Some friends met up with us there, including Dan (shown here), who is enjoying a Zap Mama set at the Rhythm Stage. Essentially Bumbershoot is a massive arts festival in Seattle that features a wide array of performers. Chances are, anyone can find at least one artist they like on a Bumbershoot line up. Word of advice: Plan ahead and reserve hotel space now or you may end up at the Seattle Inn... shudder.
Another very memorable trip was our Thanksgiving jaunt to Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. We were one of two groups in the entire place, or so it felt. It is a truly extraordinary place, so go now before it becomes like the Grand Canyon - full of tourists on buses. This photo was taken at the top of Peek-a-Boo Slot Canyon. The dogs were not all that thrilled about trying to scramble up the slick rock, but Kuma did enjoy almost pushing me out of the opening to the Canyon.
So it has been a busy but great year. If you want to see stuff I have been looking at on the web, check out our links page! Also, did you find the secret link on this page?
This piece of fluff was created using a book and the help of lots of friends....
