Pepper Harvest 2003
Some of a single day's pepper harvest, Summer 2003

Starting at the top left, going more or less clockwise, that's

  1. Butan Commercial #8** on the table
  2. Orange Thai (a larger plant), Aji Limón and Starfish on small plate 1
  3. Rainforest** between small white plates
  4. Czechoslovakian Black on upper right small plate 2
  5. Joe's Long on the white platter lower right (dries absolutely perfectly--even here in Houston!)
  6. Orias Kosszarvu** on the table to left of them, with Rainforest immediately above
  7. Tobago Sweet Scotch Bonnet--absolutely no heat. Little flavor, too, but absolutely, positively no heat! Monster of a plant.
**I do not have seed available for these in 2004 due to a pest problem.

Peppers we trialed in 2003 from SSE members.

Chervena Chujski OP ~85 broad neck, tapering to a point, 2 x 5 Green ripens to red Excellent-flavored, very sweet fruit borne in abundance. Harvest when red for sweetest flavor. Excellent for fresh eating. Bulgarian heirloom. One of our faves from 2003. Unfortunately, we had a pest problem that absolutely devastated peppers when they began to ripen, so we were unable to save seed in 2003. We're trying it again this year, hoping to produce seed.
Pizza Pepper OP ~80 large conical 1.5 x 3 Green ripens to red Thick-walled pepper that has a mild heat only in the ribs of the fruit. A friend's plant was prolific, kept setting til Christmas. Unfortunately, we had a pest problem that absolutely devastated peppers as they grew, so we were unable to save seed in 2003. We're trying it again this year, hoping to produce seed.
Czechoslovakian Black OP ~80 jalapeño-shaped Blackish-purple ripens to red Awesome pepper! Fruits are blackish-purple when immature, ripening to a gorgeous glowing red. Wonderful flavor, with just the right amount of heat (jalapeño level) for general use. Excellent stir-fried with summer squash and onions. Very productive. Our fave from 2003.
Joe's Long OP ~85 cayenne-type to 12" Green ripens to red Excellent pepper for hot pepper flakes. Dries perfectly, even here in Houston. Extremely productive. Much sought-after Italian heirloom.
Orias Kosszarvu OP ~80 long, tapered Green ripens to red Thick-walled fruit are 1.5" thick at the shoulder, about 5-7" long, tapering to a point. Excellently flavored flesh is mild, but the veins carry some heat. Prolific. Another fave from 2003. Unfortunately, we had a pest problem that absolutely devastated peppers after we ate the first few ripe ones, so we were unable to save seed in 2003. We're trying it again this year, hoping to produce seed.
Starfish OP ~85 1.5" scallops Green ripens to red C. baccatum. Very large tree-like plant (to 4') carries the "starfish" peppers like decorations. Heat will vary over a season from very mild to blisteringly hot. Beautiful fruit.

As I have time, I will upload individual pictures of the plants and fruits if I have them, along with better descriptions. I'd planned to have the website all ready before the SSE yearbook came out, but life kinda got in the way.
