Maizey, "Carousel's Amazing Grace", CD, CGC, TDI. My 56 pound brindle girl, born May 21, 1994.

She didn't model for the Beanie-Baby,
but she just about could have, huh?

Grace, Maizey & Shari

This was Maizey's first AKC Trial. She scored a 196.5 out of a possible 200. She was High in Trial that day, and we were *sooooo* proud! But she didn't get a "leg" on her title: there were only 5 dogs in the long exercises; the rule was that six were required. Two months later, the rule was changed. Sigh. She won the Harry Otis Award anyway.

Here we are in January 2001; I'm the redhead, and Grace is the one with the
broken wrist. She looks rather proud of herself, doesn't she? Guess who
picked up the extra chores? No thanks, I wouldn't trade.

My two girls!

Maizey gets up in the morning when I get up, whether it's 6 a.m. or 10 a.m. Maddy, on the other hand, will happily slug-a-bed until noon, or after; so that Maizey's had the first walk of the day before Maddy opens an eye. Maddy, princess that she is, gets breakfast in bed -- a bit of raw hamburger with pills tucked inside, topped with a dusting of garlic, and a few raisins, or maybe a chunk of apple. Maizey has to wait until the "noon meal" -- another snack, really, consisting of raw food with vitamins tucked in. Greedy little Maddy gets this meal, too.
Then it's off for the "main walk" of the day, a couple of miles over hill and dale, or maybe to the beach. Frequently we play with toys: Maizey just about insists on half an hour with her green Cressite ball. She won't touch Maddy's red one, no matter how far I throw it. Her "ballie" is Maizey's fave thing in all the world; though she's pretty fond of her "fluff's" too. Maizey's key-word is "MINE!" Giving up her toy is her least favorite thing to do.
Maddy likes to play, and is more fun to play with than the serious, determined Maizey; Maddy is more interactive. You have to do something with her; just throwing it isn't challenge enough. Maddy will retrieve, but is happiest if she has to search hard for her toy, which can be anything (a kong, a stick, a soft-bite floppy disk). She has a wonderful nose, and marks the fall as well as any Labrador.
Oh, they play games together, too. And I bet you can guess the favorite. That's right: tug of war. This is pretty hard on the fluff-toys; life expectancy for one of those is about half an hour. The one toy that has lasted is one I found in a horse catalog: a Jolly Ball. This thing is tough! It has a handle, which Maddy grabs; and the ball part, which Maizey grabs. The winner of the tug gets to push the ball with her nose, while the loser struggles to catch up and reclaim the prize. Can you guess what noses look like after a session with the Jolly Ball? We don't play more than once a week because it takes that long for the bruises and abrasions to heal. I use a Vitamin E stick on their noses; I should buy stock in the company. We never leave them with toys, play is always supervised. They don't get bored with toys, that way; and they don't get into sisterly scraps. Maizey is definitely "senior dog" and "in charge", but Maddy still has dreams of grandeur.
