Cruising America's Great Loop

The Great Loop is the continuous waterway that encompasses the eastern portion of North America – including the Atlantic and Gulf Intracoastal Waterways, the Great Lakes, the Canadian Heritage Canals, and the inland rivers of America’s heartland. It is also known as the Great Circle Route and is considered one of the safest long distance cruising routes in the world. To travel all -- or a portion of the Great Loop -- any of its magnificent side trips -- is an adventure of a lifetime.

Ever since we acquired full ownership of the Shangri-La, Barbie has said “now she owns an anchor”, meaning something to hold us to always coming back to Wisconsin.  I keep telling her that it’s not so.  We have already moved to Michigan's Upper Peninsula.  On the south end of Lake Michigan is a river that runs through Chicago that will take us to many other fine cruising areas.  I was referring to the western portion of America’s Great Loop.

Cruising the Great Loop has always been a dream of mine.  I just didn’t know much about it, where to get any information about cruising the Great Loop, or if it could ever be a reality.  Well that has changed after I found out about America’s Great Loop Cruiser’s Association. (Click on their logo above to learn more about them.)  Barbie still thinks this a just a dream of mine, but she has said she would go with me, IF we ever go.

Well I think with a few modifications on the Shangri-La, we could make this cruise a reality for us.  So for the next couple (few) of years I will be refitting the Shangri-La with the necessary systems and conveniences to make a long cruise, from the Great Lakes to Florida and then return via the East Coast, a safe and enjoyable adventure.  My goal is to cast off on our cruise starting in the spring of 2012.  Our cruise may take us several years to complete so stay with us as we start working on a new chapter in The Ongoing Adventures of Barbie & Ken.

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed
by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do.
So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor.
Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”
- Mark Twain
