Following is an update of our LAMP plans for this year at Servants of Christ Lutheran Church in Indianapolis.

I am happy to announce that we will have two teams going to Manitoba, Canada this year to teach Vacation Bible School.

Map of North America

Our first team consists of Steve & EJ Walton, and Wilma Orton from Evansville, Indiana.  They will be traveling to Leaf Rapids, Manitoba the week of July 9 to 13, where they expect to teach Vacation Bible School to approximately 35 children from that community.  Leaf Rapids is also a small mining community, with a population of 1504.  This will be Steve and EJ’s fifth trip to Leaf Rapids.

Our second team consists of Priscilla McGraw, Cynthia Bell, and Neal Thomsen.  They will be going to Snow Lake, Manitoba the week of July 16 to 20, where they expect to teach Vacation Bible School to approximately 80 children from that community.  Snow Lake is a small mining community, with a population of 1310.  Priscilla, Cynthia, and Neal will be returning to Snow Lake for the second time (Neal went in 1999).

Lindsey Hahn has again graciously offered to fly the teams up to Canada and back.  For this we are very grateful.  Lindsey owns a Piper Malibu Mirage, and pictures of a similar plane are shown below, with views of the the cockpit, the cabin, and the exterior.

In Leaf Rapids, we will be staying with Bunnie and Alvain Morris.  They are shown below.  Alvain works at the local mine (copper and zinc), while Bunnie was the Sunday School teacher at Cross of Faith Anglican Church until it closed in 1998.

In Leaf Rapids, we conduct our VBS at Christ the King Catholic church.  We thank them for their help.

And here are pictures of some of the kids that we had in VBS at Leaf Rapids.  About half are native (Cree Indian) and about half are from Newfoundland.  We have had as many as 36 kids.  They are all great and we love them all.

And here are pictures of some of the kids that Carla and her team had in VBS at Snow Lake.  These kids were primarily from Newfoundland.  In Snow Lake, they have had as many as 80 kids.  In fact, they split the kids into two sessions; one in the morning and one in the afternoon.

Our commissioning will be held in front of the congregation on a Sunday yet to be determined (one commissioning at each service - team members may attend either commissioning).  Pastor Ron incorporated our hymn, LBW number 723, into the commissioning service.  This hymn embodies what we as Servants of Christ are trying to accomplish with our VBS trips.

Hymn 723 - The Spirit Sends Us Forth to Serve

The Spirit sends us forth to serve;
we go in Jesus' name
to bring glad tidings to the poor,
God's favor to proclaim.

We go to comfort those who mourn
and set the burdened free;
where hope is dim, to share a dream
and help the blind to see.

We go to be the hands of Christ,
to scatter joy like seed
and, all our days, to cherish life,
to do the loving deed.

Then let us go to serve in peace,
the Gospel to proclaim.
God's Spirit has empowered us;
we go in Jesus' name.

(by Delores Dufner - LBW Hymn 723)

In closing, let me say that we are very excited about this year’s LAMP Vacation Bible School ministry, and on behalf of all of the children that this will serve, offer a heartfelt thank you to the congregation for the generous support given to this mission.
