El Cinco De Mayo

Mexico's history has been plagued by numerous battles beginning with the Spaniards and ending with a revolution. One battle of extraordinary significant is the one fought between a simple Indian and an emperor, and the Indian prevailed. This battle was brought on because of the injustices done to the poor peasants by the French ruling class.

If you're familiar with the history of Mexico, you know the Indian was Benito Juarez and the Emperor was Maximilian of Austria. And the battle, in which the Mexicans defeated the French, was known as the "Batalla del 5 de Mayo", fought in Fuerte de Loreto, in Puebla, in l862.

In our struggles for survival we find ourselves isolated from reality, feeling a sense of hopelessness and failure. But we must continue fighting battles in order to survive. We need to arm ourself with the one thought, and one thought only. We are one people, not Hispanics, not White, not Black and not Ameriasian, just people who want to make this a better world in which to live in.

Benito Juarez, the simple Indian, who became the first president recognized by the Republic of Mexico, defeated an Emperor, because he (Juarez) believed in principals and justice for all. Let us continue to uphold this true and just cause on this anniversary of "Cinco de Mayo", We do not want to lie in ruin destroyed by our own humanity.

We need to unite as a group, and continue to struggle and fight the battles of injustice and oppression just as others have before us. We have a duty to perform, and taking responsibility for our actions is one of them.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION:

Many INS offices are closing as they continue winding down the legalization process under the AMNESTY/SAW Program. The closure of the offices has made it difficult for many applicants. Not only is it inconvenient to travel a longer distance to receive extensions on your work permit, or replace a card that has been lost or stolen, it is also difficult to gain the right information regarding immigration matters.

Something to mention is Temporary Residents that have not filed for adjustment to Permanent Resident under the Immigration Act of l990 (IMMACT), have been given a one-year extension by the INS to file.

The extension can be from your filing date, or your adjustment date, whichever is more convenient for you. In order to file an application for Permanent Resident, their is an extra fee of $40 for late filing, in addition to the regular $80 fee.

Applicants who were previously denied because of late filing will have their applications redetermined without having to pay the additional fee. If you are among the ones who have not filed your application, do so now. Do not take a chance on losing you legalization status.

INCOME TAX:

The tax processing for l99l is officially over, but for a number of taxpayers, notices from the IRS keep appearing. These notices vary. They can be as simple as answering a few questions to a more complicated request such as a "Notice of Intent to Levy".

All notices are important and should be answered as soon as possible. If you receive a "Notice of Intent to Levy", you are required to respond immediately. Failure to do so could result in serious consequences.

EDUCATIONAL FACTS: DIAL 9 1 1 FOR HELP

This helpful information is provided for you by the Tustin Police Department.

911 is the only number you need to know if you have an emergency and you need help fast. This simple number can get you the police, the fire department, medical aid or other emergency help.

You should always dial 9ll when it's a real emergency and you need help fast. Dial 9ll if someone is hurt and needs an ambulance or para-medics, or if you see a fire or if you see a crime like someone stealing something or hurting someone. Please remember that calling for help is not a joke.

When an emergency occurs, stay calm. You can be more helpful if you don't get too excited. Just dial 9ll from any telephone and the 9ll dispatcher will answer the call.

Even if you don't speak English, tell the dispatcher that you speak only Spanish and then tell them the problem. Tell the person where the emergency is. Give your exact address and your name. DO NOT HANG UP. You may have to answer some questions to get the right kind of help as fast as possible.

You can use this emergency number anywhere in California. Your call to 9ll will be answered by a person whose only job is to handle emergency phone calls. Even if you can't talk, help can still find you as long as you don't hang up.

Remember: Only dial the 9ll number when it's a real emergency.
