I hope this web site has helped you in some way with learning about Senegal Parrots or parrots in general. This last page has information to assist you in learning about parrots. I've listed resources that I've found helpful.
To find additional information on these books, I have linked each title to its Amazon.com web page. I am not recommending Amazon.com as the only place to obtain these books, but only as one way to purchase them. Whenever possible, I always recommend you make purchases from your local pet or bird specialty store. I have ordered numerous times from Amazon.com for materials my local store did not have and have been very pleased with their service.
Guide to the Senegal Parrot and its Family -- by Mattie Sue Athan and Donalee Deter -- An excellent, general review of Senegal Parrots and other Poicephalus parrots. This is a must have book for those with Senegal Parrots or their close relatives.
Guide to Companion Parrot Behavior -- by Mattie Sue Athan -- A very good book for any parrot owner. Highly recommended.
Companion Parrot Handbook, Using Nurturing Guidance To Create The Best Companion Parrot Possible -- by Sally Blanchard -- I added this book to my collection in October 2006. It is very helpful and insightful. It's the most wide ranging in topics of any book I own. It is not species specific and it reaffirmed many things I believe and do, and gave me a few new ideas to use. Highly recommended.
Guide to a Well-Behaved Parrot -- by Mattie Sue Athan -- Good, but for me too similar to the Guide to Companion Parrot Behavior.
The Complete Bird Owner's Handbook -- Dr. Gary A. Gallerstein, D.V.M. -- Though some of this book is dated, its section on first aid makes it worth owning this book. After the Guide to the Senegal Parrot and its Family, this is the second book I'd recommend adding to your library.
Parrots For Dummies -- by Nikki Moustaki -- A good, general introduction to keeping a parrot. Good as a first book to get basic information.
The Parrot Who Owns Me : The Story Of A Relationship -- by Joanna Burger -- Not always educational, not always the best or most correct actions demonstrated, but a good, fun read that I recommend.
Birds on the Couch: The Bird Shrink's Guide to Keeping Polly from Going Crackers and You Out of the Cuckoo's Nest -- by Ruth Hanessian -- Gives you a lot of ideas on the behavioral needs of parrots. A good read.
The Healthy Bird Cookbook: A Lifesaving Nutritional Guide and Recipe Collection -- by Robin Deutsch -- I recently added this book to my collection. When I've looked at it I like the recipes and ideas it gives me for making foods for my parrot . . . and some sound good for me too.
Parrot Training : A Guide To Taming And Gentling Your Avian Companion -- by Bonnie Munroe Doane -- I found some information in this book contradictory to information I've researched before. Good for some, but other books here are far better.
BIRDTALK Magazine -- A monthly magazine that is enriching, educational, and motivating. Great stories and topics overall. Highly recommended.
BirdsUSA -- A yearly publication from the publishers of BIRDTALK Magazine. Good resource with its listings of Avian Veterinarians and other resources. Good introductory articles for bird keepers.
There are many web sites out on the Internet to be found. A good search at Google.com will probably bring you more sites than you can possibly access. Numerous forums are available for both general and specific birds. Please remember, when visiting a web site evaluate the information you learn. Not all information on the Internet is current, correct, or safe for you to follow for your bird.
If you have any questions or comments about this web site, please feel free to contact me. You may email me at senegalparrot@earthlink.net Since I receive many spam emails, please write "Parrot Question" or "Parrot Web Site" in the subject line of your email . . . otherwise it may be deleted before I read it.
Thank you for visiting my web site.
I hope you have found it of some benefit to you and your bird.
