Super Bowl XXIX Highlights

Super Bowl XXIX was marked by one of the best offenses rising to peak efficiency. Game MVP Steve Young threw a record six touchdown passes (24-of-36 for 325 yards) and was the 49ers' leading rusher with 49 yards on five carries.

Young also threw some praise George Seifert's way: "I really want to give George credit for what he has done this year. He let the reins go and let the horses run." But in typical fashion, Seifert deflected credit, calling the victory "a wonderful job by the coaching staff and all the players."

To overcome defensive lapses that had stopped the 49ers in the NFC Championship Game for two straight seasons, San Francisco stocked up on talented and hungry defensive free agents. They also had outspoken players such as William Floyd, Ricky Watters and Deion Sanders.

Seifert, who loosened up as the 1994 season went along, said, "I honestly felt that if I tried to impose too much of myself on that team and be too restrictive, the whole thing would have crumbled."

The NFC Championship had been the emotional, crowning moment for Seifert, when the 49ers beat Dallas 38-28. (The Cowboys had stopped the 49ers' championship run in the NFC title game in 1992 and 1993.) "I've got four championship rings," Seifert said on his way to a fifth. "Nothing compares to the emotions of this one."

The victory put Seifert in the class of coaches with two or more Super Bowl Championships: Bill Walsh, Vince Lombardi, Don Shula, Joe Gibbs, Chuck Noll, Jimmy Johnson and Tom Landry. (Seifert's offensive coordinator from the 1994 championship run -- Mike Shanahan -- joined that list this year.)
