Benjamin Birdsall was a 20 year old native of Louisiana. He was the son of Benjamin F. and Catherine F. Birdsall. Birdsall was single and working as a clerk in Assumption Parish when the war began. Benjamin enlisted with the 8th Louisiana at Camp Moore on June 19th, 1861. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant on June 27th, 1862 and present at every action up to being killed at Sharpsburg, Maryland on September 17th, 1862.
