NEW WRITINGS

The Civil War Battlefield Guide
by The Conservation Fund
Second Edition

If you have the First Edition, you know how helpful the topographical maps are when visiting the battlefields. This new edition now includes the maps in full color.

Battles listed in this edition include the 384 principal battles designated by the Civil War Sites Advisory Commission Report on the Nation's Civil War Battlefields. This amounts to 3.7 percent of the 10,500 armed conflicts occurred during the war. 23 of the 384 occurred in Louisiana.

Principal battles were not classified by the size of the battle or the numbers involved. However, they were classified by influence into 4 groups;

  • 45 sites - having a decisive influence on a campaign and a direct impact on the course of the war.

  • 104 sites - having a direct and decisive influence on their campaign.

  • 128 sites - having observable influence on the outcome of a campaign.

  • 107 sites - having a limited influence on the outcome of their campaign or operation but achieving or affecting important local objectives.

The guide has 495 pages full of maps and photographs. It is well worth the $25 and is essential reference for anyone interested in the war.

The Conservation Fund is a national nonprofit organization based in Arlington, Virginia.
