Touched By War: Battles Fought in the Lafourche District by Christopher G. Pena

Touched By War chronicles in detail for the first time the five major battles fought in the Lafourche region of Southeast Louisiana during the American Civil War. Those battles were fought at Georgia Landing, two miles north of Labadieville, October 27, 1862; Lafourche Crossing, four miles south of Thibodaux, June 20-21, 1863; Brashear City (present day Morgan City), June 23, 1863; Fort Butler at the juncture of Bayou Lafourche and the Mississippi River at Donaldsonville, June 28, 1863; and Kock's or Cox's plantation (St. Emma Plantation), three miles south of Donaldsonville along the banks of Bayou Lafourche, July 13, 1863.

In the introductory chapter a general history of the area will be discussed, together with the building of the first railway between Algiers and Morgan City (the New Orleans, Opelousas, Great Western Railroad) - a process that took five years to complete [1852-1857]. Louisiana's secession from the Union, state militia reorganization and preparation for war with particular emphasis placed on the Lafourche region will be covered in Chapters One and Two. Some dozen skirmishes fought in this area between May 1862 and July 1863 will likewise be addressed in subsequent chapters.

Christopher G. Pena is an Assistant Professor at Nicholls State University and a registered nurse at Thibodaux Regional Medical Center in Thibodaux, Louisiana. He has edited two Civil War related documents that appear in the Louisiana History. His interest in the American Civil War extends to reenacting. Mr. Pena is currently a member of the 16th Louisiana; Company D.

Touched By War is hardbound with a colored illustrated jacket, 6" x 9" in size, xviii, 454 pages in length. It includes 63 photos and illustrations (many of which have never before appeared in print), 18 maps, acknowledgments, preface, introduction, appendices, bibliography, and index.
