Cake (one of five pieces in the Path installation)
1997
47" x 12" x 12"
limestone, glass, angel food cake

"Cake", along with "Devil's Food Cake", "Eclair", "Pecan Pie" and "Cheesecake" were designed as mile markers to be placed along the jogging path that circles Town Lake in Austin. I wanted to remind people not to get too caught up in their abs — we all rot someday.

"Cake" and "Pie" premiered at a solo show at Robert McClain & Co. Fine Art in October of 1997. The full installation, complete with cinnamon-laced dirt, was set up at the Dallas Visual Arts Center in December 1997. That show, titled Revelation, was curated by Diana Block, director of the University of North Texas Art Gallery. Three of the five pieces were damaged beyond repair during return shipment but "Cake" and "Pie" survived.
