Long before the S there was the N

I guess my passion for Honda cars began about the same time Honda started to sell cars in the United States. Back in 1971 when I was still just a sprout, my older brother’s friend Greg spent a dollar on a raffle ticket and was the lucky winner of a brand new “Spring Yellow” N600. For some reason I was always fascinated by that car. I guess I must have been drawn to its size (just my size at that time), the dash with the cubbyhole and cool hazard light switch or perhaps the fact that it was completely different than any other car I had ever seen.

Back in 1979 before I even had a driver's license, I bought my first car!  It was this 1972 Honda 600 Sedan or N600. This makes me a Honda enthusiast long before it was fashionable.  The car was garaged in 1985 and has not seen the road since.  I am planning a nice restoration for it to make it better than ever.  It will be a blast from the past to sit behind the wheel again.

The snazzy 70's seat covers will be tossed.  Underneath are the original seat covers in terrific shape!  Note the shifter console that was a dealer installed option.

The clock pictured here filling the dash cubbyhole was a factory option.  The steering wheel is aftermarket but I have the original.  I also added a tachometer from a Z600 to the left of the speedometer.  That was all well and good but what to do with the fuel gauge.  Well, I was young so I drilled a big hole in the glove box door and stuck a Z600 fuel gauge there.  My older self wonders what I was thinking!  Well that was back in the days when you could buy these cars for $100 and parts cars were given away.  Well, over the years I have collected NOS parts to restore the dash.  I even found a cool NOS dash in Japan that allows for the fuel gauge to be mounted between the tach and speedo.  No more fuel gauge in the glove box...

August 2006 my N600 is removed from storage and loaded on a carrier for its new home.  It had been stored since 1985... Thanks Dad for letting me occupy a corner of your garage for so long!  He is very happy to have more garage space and I am very happy to have my car back!

Looks like Ponch and John got their man!  No match for the Kawasaki's of the day...
