Objective:
I seek a full-time position as a teacher of English, Speech, Journalism, Video Production or Drama.

Professional Experience (in reverse chronological order)

March 14, 1994 to December 21, 2001
Santa Maria Joint Union High School District, 829 S. Lincoln, Santa Maria, CA 93454
Orcutt Union School District, 501 Dyer, Orcutt, CA 93455
Jefferson Elementary School District 101 Lincoln Ave. Daly City, CA 94015
Substitute Teacher:  I supervise and assist the learning/social/psychological processes of 25-35 students ranging in age from 5 to 18 when their regular teacher cannot tend to them.

August 7, 2000 to August 2001
UPS Teleservices 2100 S. Blosser Rd. Santa Maria, CA 93458
Technical Support Technician: I assist business shipping customers of United Parcel Service with their shipping hardware and software.

December 1996 to 2000
North Beach Pizza
San Francisco/San Mateo, CA
Manager: I hired personnel, wrote ads, took inventory, processed orders for pizza and pasta dishes, dispatched delivery drivers, collected money, and served as a hierarchical figurehead at this popular, busy, high-volume Bay Area restaurant.  This was my first position with authority over other adult workers.  I used my authority with discretion, choosing a more egalitarian, team building approach over a more "top down", autocratic style.  I took this position to get management experience.

October 1995 to November, 1996
Merrill Research and Associates
San Mateo, CA
Telephone Interviewer/Video Game Focus Group Recruiter:
I recruited young video game tournament winners as focus group participants for Sony's Playstation R&D  . I also conducted thousands of telephone interviews with respondents who ranged from innocent bystanders trying to eat dinner to high-tech computer professionals.  In my capacity as an interviewer, I was required to learn new highly technical concepts quickly to follow along with the interview scripts, which I often adjusted for brevity and clarity.  I left this job when I learned of a management position at a popular restaurant around the corner from my house.

July 30, 1992 to February 8, 1993
Bayliss Broadcasting Incorporated:  KSNI/KSMA Santa Maria, CA 93454
Advertising Sales / Account Executive:  I created and maintained advertising accounts on the sister radio stations KSCN 102.5FM and KSMA 1240AM.  From this experience, I learned how to sell things that are invisible to the eye and how not to get sold by clever ad salespeople, all of whom claim the highest ratings.  After one year and thousands of dollars worth of profit generated for the company, I remembered that journalism, not advertising sales, was my original goal and left to pursue a teaching credential so that after I had found work in my chosen field, I could use my professional experience to teach young people the craft of journalism.

October 10, 1990 to May 23, 1992
Henry Madden Library (at CSU Fresno)
Fresno, CA
Student assistant: I worked in the Music Library assisting the librarian with filing  and collating of library material.  I maintained and repaired audio equipment for  the listening library and aided students in research and selection of recordings.

April 14, 1990 to June 5, 1990
Show 'N' Tell Video Productions
Santa Maria, CA 93454
Sales/Creative Consultant: I was in charge of sales and setting up accounts with local schools for "Video Identification/Keepsake Tapes" of each of their students for emergency ID and as gifts for loved ones.  Less than a month after I began organizing the PTAs and principals around this concept, Blockbuster Video began offering the same service at no cost.  I saved the company from disaster by originating the Video Yearbook concept.  It turned out to be a much better idea than what I was hired for and I signed up five school in less than on month.  I got a very small percentage of the profits because I never signed a contract.  This is the job I worked for the least amount of time, the least amount of money, and under the most intense pressure I've ever experienced, and I loved every minute.

June, 1987 to February, 1988
The Wherehouse
Santa Maria, CA 93454
Customer Service Representative:  I handled the cash register and the video checkout stations.   I became known as "The Video Guy" while working at The Wherehouse, a job I took to save up money for school. Before three months had gone by, I had memorized every videoís location in the store.  I was adept at file maintenance/data entry and retrieval on store computers and helped the staff use their database more  productively.   I left The Wherehouse when more busboy hours became available at The Jetty Restaurant.

March, 1985 to May, 1990
The Jetty Restaurant
Santa Maria, CA 93455
Cook/Busboy/Dishwasher: I began work at The Jetty Restaurant at age 16 as a dishwasher.  I soon after sought the position of busboy and found it to be more profitable and more suited to my abilities.  One year later, I started working extra hours as a cook so I could learn how to cook a broader range of meals.  I left The Jetty at age 21, when I left for Fresno State University.
