Here indeed is a flight of fancy. The gas balloon is marked "a" and above it, under the beautiful parasol, what do we find? Birds in the harness shown in Fig. 4 mounted on rotatable shafts attached to the balloon's superstructure.
The birds flap their wings and the balloon sails merrily on its course which the captain can change by rotating the shafts.
