MEANS OF PROTECTION FOR FEMININE WEAR

U.S. Patent No. 1,109,264

And
EXCURSIONS

The inventor of this gem is a woman, so we should pay attention when she says "rude and flirtatious youths... frequently avail themselves of the crowded condition of cars to annoy... ladies next whom they may be sitting by pressing a knee or thigh against... the knee or thigh of their feminine neighbor."

Let's see how she discouraged this sort of goings on.

Several variants of the gadget are shown, but let's take figures 1 and 2. This is attached to a garter which the lady mounts on her thigh.

Note that the base b carries a leaf spring, s, having a recessed portion, s', normally covering a sharp pin, p. Press on the spring, however, and the recessed portion moves over the pin, exposing the pin and pricking the presser.

In case the gentleman sitting next to her looks promising, the lady can use the model shown in Figs. 5 and 6. Unless she pivots that shield, a, no amount of friendly thigh pressure will prick the masher.
