includes maps, periodicals, photographs, census records, newspapers and
genealogies. (See a partial list of our collection.)
The Society also provides assistance to researchers and encourages
historical studies.

"Beers" Atlas of Somerset
This high-quality, SCHS reprint of the 1873 Beers Atlas of
Somerset County, NJ, contains 62 pages of historic, engraved maps of
communities with names of property owners.
Most plates have a table listing business names by category. The
atlas also includes many tables of county data from the 1870 census.

SCHS founding. It faithfully copies the style and format of the
original magazine published by the Society during the years 1912-19.

Middlebrook
The American Eagle's Nest
by Carl E. Prince
A history of General Washington's encampment at Middlebrook, NJ,
during the winter of 1777-78. Prince provides a detailed account of
this often neglected period of the American Revolution. This
well-written history focuses attention on the importance of Somerset
County, the Watchung Mountains, and Washington's strategy in
selecting the Middlebrook location. The book is based on Prince's
masters thesis submitted to Rutgers University in 1957.

Between 1890 and 1920s, postcards were a popular means of keeping
in touch with friends and family. Postcard photographers traveled
widely taking photographs of local landmarks and street scenes.
Crowds often assembled and were happy to pose for the pictures.
These images, printed as postcards and sold in general stores,
survive today and provide an important glimpse into the history of a
bygone era.
