Admirals at Glacier National Park on August 2, 1999
These two types of "Admirals" were together on August 2, 1999, on gravel at the shore of Swiftcurrent Lake, in the northeastern part of Glacier National Park.  Altogether, there were about 10 individuals "puddling" on the wet gravel.  Most were like the "White Admirals" pictured here; only a few had the orange wing tips and additional white on the underside.  I only saw the two varieties photographed below.  Identification is my best guess based on "Butterflies of the Rocky Mountain States", edited by Clifford D. Ferris and F. Martin Brown (University of Oklahoma Press, 1981).
Three of the group of Admirals, with the one in the center having orange wing tips.  That is the individual shown in rows 3 and 4 below.
Limenitis arthemis rubrofasciata (White Admiral)
This is the individual in the center of the group of three, above.  Probably Limenitis lorquini burrisonii.  Possibly a hybrid of Limenitis weidemeyerii with L. lorquini.
A few more views of the same Limenitis lorquini individual.
