Photographing Craft Items in the Digital Age
Presented by George Post

In the new “digital age” anyone can purchase a fairly decent digital camera--in some cases for as little as $300--and with the aid of a computer program can produce good-quality photographs of their work.

George Post has very successfully created a career out of photographing handcrafted objects. Besides shooting at his home studio, he’s been the official on-site studio photographer for the American Craft Council show in SF since 1981, and at Roy Helm’s Contemporary Crafts Market shows at Fort Mason and the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium since 1988. During these nearly three decades he has created thousands of superb jury photographs for many leading and beginning craftspeople.

George will be discussing the changes that have occurred in both the craft world and the photography world as a result of digital imaging. He’ll answer some basic questions such as: When are your shots adequate and when is it better—and less frustrating--to go to a professional photographer? What can you expect from a “professional” photographer?

George will also discuss a number of technical issues and the importance of lighting; e.g. why do some images of glass beads show their inherent transparency or translucency while other images of similar beads are stiff and lifeless?

A new ethical question has also been raised by the ease of computer enhancement of photographs. To what level may the image of a craft piece be “corrected” (or even enhanced) and still be an honest representation of the item for juried entries?

George Post is a San Francisco Bay Area based freelance photographer who specializes in taking pictures of craft items. A large part of his work is creating images for craft show and gallery jurying. Jewelry photography is his major area of expertise these days, but he has photographed any medium that can be imagined. He says that the breadth of creativity and technical accomplishment that he is called upon to photograph continuously amazes him.
