As a singer and
songwriter, Teresa Burgess-Morris has recorded her ups and downs in the form of a diary of her life experiences. One of her
most significant songs addresses the painful topic of domestic violence. Her newest song "Don't Hurt the Baby's Mama" is beautiful,
poignant, and important. It's not only a touching country music ballad in the "Ode to Billie Joe" genre, it's also seen as
a tool for awareness of the serious and deadly problem that is suffered by many women of today - that of spousal abuse.
Teresa's first-hand knowledge of this
devastating experience came early. Although an outstanding student leader and soloist while in high school (Who's Who in American
High School Students was one accolade), her ambitions were cut short by a senior year pregnancy. Her first love had proposed
before the pregnancy, but their marriage soon morphed into a real-life horror story complete with his alcohol abuse, adultery,
and finally physical violence.
"Don't Hurt the Baby's Mama" brings
tears of recognition to many female listeners, and as a result, Teresa has generously decided to participate in the cause.
She will donate a portion of the song's proceeds to The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, established to provide
assistance for existing and developing shelters and programs across the country. In this way, she hopes to provide
help to others who may be suffering in similarly painful situations.
