William J. Carr, 78, of Tinton Falls, formerly of Atlantic Highlands and Dorchester, Mass., died Sunday, March 9, at Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune.
 
He was a graduate of Villanova University. He was a World War II Army veteran. He served in the 327th Glider Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division - the "Screaming Eagles" and saw action at Normandy, in the Rhineland, at Ardennes/Alsace and in Central Europe.
 
In 1947, he began his career with Croydon Hall Academy, Leonardo. He taught math and science and served as the athletic director and head basketball coach at the school until it closed in 1975.
 
Following the school's closing, he went to work at the Monmouth Park Racetrack, Oceanport.
 
Born in Boston, he was raised in Dorchester.
 
He was predeceased by two brothers, John M. Carr and Patrick F. Carr; and two sisters, Margaret "Rita" Lynch and Eileen C. McCrevan. Surviving are his wife, Margaret Strauss Carr; two sisters, Mary E. Duffy of Braintree, and Esther K. Cavanagh of Buffalo; a niece, Joan E. Duffy of Braintree; a nephew, John J. "Jay" Duffy, Jr. of Hingham; and many other nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
 
Visiting hours will be at Dennis Sweeney Funeral Home, 74 Elm St., Quincy, Mass. A funeral will be held from the funeral home followed by a funeral Mass at St. Gregory Church, Dorchester. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Interment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, West Roxbury.
